A Master Plan has been developed outlining the expansion of Figueres Hospital from its current 29,031.15 m² to 43,780 m² by 2040.
This expansion, which also encompasses the Bernat Jaume Socio-Sanitary Center, will be implemented in three distinct phases: an immediate-execution first stage, a mid-term second stage scheduled between 2024 and 2030, and a third stage extending until 2040.
The fundamental premise of this Master Plan is the spatial reorientation of Figueres Hospital. Historically, the main entrance faced Ronda del Rector Arolas, adjacent to Parc Bosc. Following the opening of the parking facility on Glòria Compte Street, it has become essential to pivot this orientation, establishing the East Building as the primary entrance to significantly enhance user accessibility. This strategic shift necessitates a short- and long-term reorganization of the hospital’s remaining healthcare services.
Strategic Objectives// The core objectives directing the Figueres Hospital Master Plan are:
- Comprehensive Demand Fulfillment: Meeting current and future functional needs across all institutional scopes, including community healthcare, teaching, and research.
- Geriatric Care Optimization: Enhancing specialized care for the elderly, adapting the infrastructure to the aging demographic of the Alt Empordà region.
- Circulation Streamlining: Creating orderly circulation patterns by strictly segregating flows to eliminate cross-contamination and user interference.
- Path Optimization: Minimizing travel distances for patients and medical staff by clustering the high-traffic outpatient zone, while clearly separating public areas from restricted technical spaces.
- Inpatient Ward Upgrades: Adapting hospitalization units to contemporary privacy and patient-care standards by increasing the ratio of single rooms.
- Participatory Integration: Incorporating emerging needs identified throughout the co-design and participatory processes.
