The Guttmann La Sagrera hospital poses its creation on the land where the former hospital of the Guttmann Institute was located, right in the centre of the La Sagrera district. Medical care and social services facilities aimed at providing specialist services for people with medullary injuries, brain damage or other neurological disabilities.
Context & Integration // The project is located on the former Guttmann clinic plot, situated in a highly central area with strategic development potential, positioned between Avinguda Meridiana, the new La Sagrera linear park, and the future Intermodal Station.
Layout & Integration // TThe building optimizes a complex hybrid program that seamlessly integrates a polyclinic center, Autonomous Living Units (URVA), and underground parking facilities.
Singularity & Character // The upper floors are to include residential architecture, with elements belonging to this type. The Meridiana façade is a wall with few windows with a graphic image as its base. It is designed for large-scale reading, providing it with presence and an urban character.
Sustainability criteria // The building’s trapezoidal geometry creates a wider north facade aligned with Garcilaso Street and a narrower south facade opening onto the inner courtyard of the city block. To respond efficiently to solar orientation, differentiated architectural strategies are deployed: the Assisted Living Units on the south facade feature private terraces that promote outdoor living by capitalizing on optimal sunlight; conversely, those on the north facade incorporate modern bay windows (tribunes) that extend the indoor living space toward the street while capturing natural daylight from the east and west. Furthermore, the north facade is engineered with increased thickness and thermal insulation to enhance the building’s overall energy performance.
