As part of the master renovation plan for Mataró Hospital—designed to expand and modernize key medical departments—Phase 3 focuses entirely on the transformation of the Oncohematology Day Hospital.
Spanning 591 m², the intervention reimagines the Day Hospital through the lens of person-centered design. The project goes beyond ensuring top-tier medical assistance to deeply prioritize the physical, psychological, and emotional well-being of its users—encompassing patients, companions, and healthcare professionals alike.
To achieve this, maximizing natural light was paramount. Large, mid-height windows were integrated to flood the interior with daylight while carefully safeguarding patient privacy from the outside.
The treatment bays feature a bespoke modular furniture and partition system developed specifically for Mataró Hospital. These custom units create distinct, private environments while seamlessly concealing the technical infrastructure required in an oncology facility (medical gas outlets, power sockets, switches, etc.). By integrating personal storage for patients within these units, the design achieves a de-medicalized, non-institutional atmosphere that fosters tranquility and comfort. Furthermore, each bay is equipped with its own audiovisual system and individually adjustable lighting controls.
The unit is thoughtfully programmed to accommodate 18 open treatment bays and 4 enclosed private rooms, 4 outpatient consultation rooms for patient follow-ups and monitoring and Dedicated staff zones, including a private lounge and a clinical research workspace.
A key highlight of the layout is the central nurse station and the adjacent medication preparation room. Strategically positioned at the absolute core of the Day Hospital, this hub offers direct lines of sight over all open treatment bays, optimizing patient supervision while minimizing foot traffic and noise within the clinical space.
